BFF: Best Friends Forever

Carla Schneider

“A friend knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails.” Donna Roberts

We love celebrating our friends and the friendships of others. In our lives, the reason we make friends changes depending on circumstance. Our earliest friends (like our first WubbaNub!) is usually based on our parents and family. Growing up with a large extended family my cousins and I were pretty much assigned a best friend based on who was closest in age. As we get older we make school friends, work friends, friends with shared interests in movies or politics and, eventually, new parent friends. Here's just a few real and fictionalized version of friendship that reminds us how important that bond is.

Winnie The Pooh & Friends

These adorable and often profound pals are a staple of many childhoods. Watching them go on adventures, learning about themselves and their friends while having a blast is like having a warm bowl of soup on a rainy day. Here are a few lovely quotes from the series:

“If you live to be a 100, I want to live to be 100 minus one day so I never have to live without you.”

“I've found somebody just like me. I thought I was the only one of them.”

“Sometimes the smallest things take the most room in your heart.”

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King

If you have the kind of idolized friendship that gets its own running joke on 30 Rock, you've pretty much hit all of the friendship goals. These two powerhouses have been friends for over forty years since they were both working at a Baltimore news station in the early 1970s. Read what Oprah says about Gayle and try not to immediately call your bestie:

She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person

Friends (Show & Cast)

The opening number "I'll Be There For You" kind of says it all, doesn't it? Six friends living in New York City in their mid-twenties trying to navigate life, love, work and everything else and doing it together. In real life, the cast of the show became close very quickly, which makes sense when you think about how the actors went from relative obscurity to international sensations overnight. Who else do you call to talk about that experience? Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are the most famously close of the crew but each actor has stated in interviews that everyone stays in touch and never lets important moments go by without involving all of the Friends.

Golden Girls

Another show where everything you need to know is in the opening song "Thank You for Being a Friend". I'm not sure what age I started watching these hilarious ladies, but I strongly identify as a "Dorothy" and have many ways spent my life waiting to age into that personality. These amazing four women (characters and actors!) explored what it means to make later in life friendships that are just as powerful and important as any of the other relationships in their lives. Hope you liked our list of BFF's! Stay tuned for more from us on friendship throughout the summer!
